Marc Leroy-Calatayud

Marc Leroy-Calatayud

When he was a kid, Marc wanted to be Harry Potter.

He later realized that magicians and conductors have a lot in common.

Since september 2016, Marc works as the assistant conductor at the Opéra National de Bordeaux and Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine. Marc comes from everywhere: born and raised in Switzerland by a French father and a Bolivian mother, he turns his eye towards the capital of classical music, Vienna. He studied there with Mark Stringer at the Universität für Musik, where he obtained his master degree with distinction in 2015.

Marc is a passionate of the world of opera. At 17 he conducts his first production of Le Voyage dans la Lune by J. Offenbach (2009). Although he greatly enjoys working on the traditional repertoire such as Il Barbiere di Siviglia (2014), he also focuses on lesser known works, conducting productions of Die Sieben Todsünden (Weill, 2013), Das Schlaue Füchlein (Janacek, 2014) and L'Histoire du Soldat (Stravinsky, 2014). In 2015, he also conducted from the continuo Ulysse Exp. n°1, a new opera based on Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. He regularly assists Marc Minkowski, at La Scala for L'Heure Espagnole/L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel, 2016), at the Wiener Staatsoper for Alcina (Haendel, 2016), with the Wiener Symphoniker for Peer Gynt (Grieg, 2016) but Andrés Orozco-Estrada as well, at Grafenegg festival for Blue-Beard's Castle (Bartok, 2016).

On top of his studies, eager to share his musical ideas, he invites young musicians to gather around various projects in Switzerland and Austria. From symphonic orchestras to opera productions, these numerous projects boost his conducting experience and shape him in group management.

Always looking for new inputs, Marc recently took part in masterclasses given by Vladimir Jurowski and Bernard Haitink, and keeps studying with Johannes Schlaefli in Zürich. Member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, he conducted two "Windows" concerts during the 2014 festival. Lately, Marc had the opportunity to work with orchestras such as Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Mozarteum Salzburg Orchestra, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble, ORF-Radio Symphonie Orchester Wien, Tonkünstler-Niederösterreich, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Sinfonietta de Lausanne, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Polish Baltic Philharmonic, etc. He was nominated European Music Talent in 2015.

Finding new ways to make music accessible to everyone is one of Marc’s major preoccupations. For this purpose, he creates projects such as a street opera production, concerts in hospitals and homeless shelters and an opera touring through small villages. Always wanting to do more, he joined in 2015 the international collective Esperanz’arts, a charity set in Paris by violonist Alexandra Soumm.
