Marc Leroy-Calatayud

Marc Leroy-Calatayud

When he was a kid, Marc wanted to be Harry Potter.

He later realized that magicians and conductors have a lot in common.

Since september 2016, Marc works as the assistant conductor at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, where he regularly conducts opera and ballet performances as well as symphony concerts.

Marc is a passionate of the world of opera. At 17 he conducts his first production of Le Voyage dans la Lune by J. Offenbach (2009). Although he greatly enjoys working on the traditional repertoire such as Cosi fan Tutte (2017) or Il Barbiere di Siviglia (2019), he also focuses on lesser known works, conducting productions of Die Sieben Todsünden (Weill, 2013), Das Schlaue Füchlein (Janacek, 2014) and L'Histoire du Soldat (Stravinsky, 2014), Ulysse Exp. n°1 (based on Monteverd, 2015), and Mârouf, Savetier du Caire (Rabaud, 2018). At the Opéra National de Bordeaux, Marc makes his debut in the ballet world, conducting classical ballet productions (La Fille mal gardée), as well as contemporary ones (Béjart, Kylían, Robbins).

As an assistant, Marc regularly works with conductors such as Marc Minkowski, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Paul Daniel, Domingo Hindoyan in major european houses such as the Wiener Staatsoper, La Scala di Milano, the Verbier and Grafenegg festivals, and on fascinating masterpieces: recently L'Heure Espagnole/L'Enfant et les Sortilèges, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Elektra, Pelleas et Mélisande, Alcina, etc.

Born and raised in Lausanne (Switzerland) by a French father and a Bolivian mother, Marc studied conducting in Vienna and Zürich, with Mark Stringer and Johannes Schlaefli, and recently took part in masterclasses given by Vladimir Jurowski and Bernard Haitink. Alongside his studies, he created a youth symphony orchestra, L'Orchestre Quipasseparlà. During eight years, he organised projects around a single preoccupation: finding new ways to make music accessible to everyone: discovery concerts, concerts in hospitals and retirement homes, New Year's Eve concerts in homeless shelters and an opera touring through small villages.

Lately, Marc had the opportunity to work with orchestras such as Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Mozarteum Salzburg Orchestra, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble, Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy, Tonkünstler-Niederösterreich, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Sinfonietta de Lausanne, Janacek Philharmonie Ostrava, etc. A member of both the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, he learnt a lot by playing for Daniel Harding, Ivan Fischer, Kent Nagano, etc. He was nominated European Music Talent in 2015.
